Boy Scout Leadership Training
Course Descriptions:
Orientation/Fast Start Training

The Fast Start training provides information to new leaders to aid them in planning and conducting their first meeting. It can also be used to provide orientation to the parents of Boy Scouts. This training provides an overview of the total program of the Boy Scouts of America as well as detailed information on the benefits of Boy Scouting and the role of the parents. The Fast Start video tapes are available through the Scout Store. These tapes can be viewed at the store or rented for a two week period. The Boy Scout Fast Start course is also available via the internet at scoutnet.scouting.org/elearning/.

 

Youth Protection Training:

Every leader in Cub Scouting should complete Youth Protection training every two years. This training is a review of the BSA Youth Protection policies and is available at the district training session or via the internet at Volunteer Logon . A leader that takes the Youth Protection training via the internet needs to register on line at the completion of the course. Be sure to include you BSA ID number which can be found on you BSA membership card.

 

New Leader Essential Course:

This course is a lead-in to all the leader specific training and is attended by ALL ADULTS NEW TO LEADERSHIP POSITIONS in Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, and Venturing. The course introduces participants to the vision, mission, and values of the Boy Scouts of America. It also highlights the resources available to Scout leaders (literature, training opportunities, the BSA's professional staff, and other volunteer Scouters), the basic of a Scout units' finances, and an overview of expectations and methods of adult leaders to keep scouting worthwhile, exciting, and safe.

Boy Scout Leader Specific Training:

Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster Leader Specific Training are designed for any adult accepting the invitation to serve as a Scoutmaster or assistant Scoutmaster of a Boy Scout troop. Troop committee members and other adults who expect to play a supportive role in the success of a troop are also invited to attend. Webelos leaders preparing to move on to a leadership position in a Scout troop are encouraged to enroll. The goal of Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster Leader Specific Training is fourfold. All participants who finish the sessions should:

  • Have the confidence that being a Scoutmaster is a manageable challenge.
  • Understand that they have abundant available resources.
  • Know that the structure of the Boy Scouts of America insures that they are part of a supportive team working to deliver the promise of Scouting to the youth of America.
  • Have a short action plan to apply what they have learned during the three sessions of Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster Leader Specific Training
